Steinenschloss Castle

The origins of Steinenschloss Castle date back to around 1100, although the exact founding date is unknown. It was probably built by the Counts of Leiningen. A round tower, built between 1125 and 1166, is one of the largest of its kind in the region. Only a few years after its completion, the castle was destroyed by fire. A document from 1237 already refers to the complex as a ruin, which was not rebuilt thereafter. The ruin changed hands several times, including the Counts of Leiningen-Dagsburg and Hanau-Lichtenberg. In the 19th century, it served as a quarry, with its stones being used, among other things, for the construction of Pirmasens-Nord railway station. Extensive excavation and restoration work has been carried out since 1968, supervised by a castle association and later the local history association of Thaleischweiler-Fröschen.
