Steinerberg Castle

The Steinerberg castle ruin is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 537 m above sea level in the Unteredt district of the municipality of Altenfelden in the Rohrbach district of Upper Austria. The remains of this castle complex are located near the Turmbauer farmhouse (Steinerberg 8).

The first owners of Steinerberg were called the Kirchbergers. Around 1195, a Ulricus de Chrichperch is mentioned here. Carl von Kirchberg sold his fief to the Tannbergers in 1263. The Steinerbergers, who were based here in the 13th century, were also vassals (so-called "single-shield knights") of the Tannbergers. In 1279, Ulricus de Stainaperg is mentioned, in 1303 Gottfried von Steinaperg is mentioned, and a Seibot von Stainaberg is also documented in 1309. After the death of their liege lord Kunrad von Tannberg († 1356), the Steinerbergers began to sell their property and emigrate. In 1362, they sold their ancestral castle to Gundacker von Tannberg zu Pürnstein. The last verifiable Steinerberger was Andreas Steinerperger, who was a vassal of the Schallenbergers in 1415. He was married to Dorothea Steinaperg, the widow of Erhard von Schallenberg. The last of the Steinerbergers was probably Wolfgang Steinaperg.
