The Steinschloss Castle Ruin, situated high above the Upper Mur Valley, is medieval defensive architecture in Styria. As one of the highest-situated castle complexes in the region, it offers historical insights and expansive views over the surrounding landscape.
History+
The origins of Steinschloss Castle date back to the 12th century, with its construction likely carried out by the 'von Stein' noble family. In 1503, the complex changed hands when the Liechtenstein family sold it to St. Lambrecht Abbey. In response to peasant uprisings and impending Turkish invasions, the castle was reinforced and upgraded around 1525 to ensure its defensive capabilities.
