The Stollburg Castle Ruin is on the Stollberg, Germany's highest vineyard, in the Handthal district near Oberschwarzach. This hilltop castle ruin is considered the possible birthplace of the minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide.

History+

The origins of Stollburg likely date back to the 12th century, when it was built by the Lords of Stollberg. As early as 1151, the castle was gifted by the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg to Ebrach Abbey. An event occurred in 1236 when Ludwig von Stollberg was killed by Würzburg horsemen during a feud with Bishop Hermann von Lobdeburg of Würzburg. Consequently, the castle fell to the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg in 1237 and served as the seat of a Würzburg bailiff from 1303.
