The castle ruin of Straßfried is located near the Austrian-Italian border, close to Thörl-Maglern in Carinthia. Its name refers to its historical importance as a guardian of trade routes that once connected the Danube region with Upper Italy.

History+

The first documented mention of the castle as “castrum strazvrid” occurred in 1279, when it passed from the Carinthian dukes to the Habsburg King Rudolf. He then granted the property to the Diocese of Bamberg, which expanded the castle into a fortress in the 13th century to secure the trade routes. Straßfried remained in Bamberg's possession until 1441. In 1687, Abbot Emmeran of Arnoldstein acquired the complex. The fortress suffered damage during the Coalition Wars when French troops blew up parts of the complex in 1797.
