In the Straußberg district of Sondershausen in the Kyffhäuser district of Thuringia, the castle ruin of Straußberg, a former spur castle, is located. Its history dates back to the 13th century.

History+

The origins of Straußberg Castle date back to around 1200, when it was probably built as a ministerial seat. Its first documented mention dates to 1267, when Berthold von Schlotheim issued a document there as a seneschal. Around 1318 it passed to the Counts of Hohnstein, and in 1356, through inheritance, to the Counts of Schwarzburg. In the 15th century, the counts pledged the dominion to the Archbishop of Mainz.
