Stuer Castle

The family castle of the von Flotow family was built in the middle of the 14th century as a moated castle in connection with fiefdoms granted by the Princes of Werle to this family. The construction shows a division into an outer bailey and a main castle. The oldest walls are still made of fieldstones and lime mortar. Later buildings were constructed from fieldstones in combination with bricks and finally only from bricks. After a fire in 1660, the castle was abandoned. The outer bailey was inhabited until the 1930s. The castle was later used as a quarry. Only parts of the residential tower remained undestroyed and were used as a small museum until the 1940s. After the roof was removed, a corner of the tower broke off. Archaeological investigations took place in the 1980s. The wet meadows have been flooded in recent years, so that the castle hill is once again partly surrounded by water as it once was. However, after paths and stairs have been developed for tourism, the castle continues to decay. There is a danger to life when entering the complex.
