Stuer Castle
The ruin of Stuer Castle is located near the village of Stuer, close to the B 198 in southern Mecklenburg.
The family castle of the von Flotow family was built as a moated castle at the end of the 13th century. The construction shows a division into an outer bailey and a main castle. The oldest walls are still made of fieldstones and lime mortar. Later buildings were constructed from fieldstones in combination with bricks and finally only from bricks. After a fire in 1660, the castle was abandoned.
The castle was later – as was common at the time – used as a quarry. Only parts of the residential tower remained undestroyed. In the 1980s, archaeological investigations took place. The wet meadows have been flooded in recent years, so that the castle mound is once again surrounded by water as it once was. After the castle was developed for tourism (paths, stairs), it subsequently fell into disrepair again.
In the vicinity of the castle are the former motte-and-bailey castles of Stuer and Darze.
