The Sulzburg castle ruin, a former hilltop castle, is situated on an elevation above the town of Sulzburg in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district.
History+
The construction of Sulzburg Castle is attributed to the Lords of Uesenberg, who presumably built it in the second half of the 12th century. This family served as protectors of Sulzburg Monastery from 1157. Under their rule, the locality was fortified and granted town rights around 1280. The Uesenbergs also held mining rights for the silver mines in Sulzburg until 1331, which Emperor Conrad II had originally granted to the Diocese of Basel around 1028. The castle served to protect and control this mining activity in the Sulzburg Valley. There is no definitive information regarding the castle's demise.
