Sveti Juraj Castle

The castle ruin of Sveti Juraj, also known as Kaštelir Sv. Jurja, is a fascinating testament to bygone eras near Poreč in Istria, Croatia. Situated on a rocky outcrop that rises majestically above the Mirna River valley, it offers insight into the prehistoric and medieval settlement history of the region.
History+
The origins of Sveti Juraj date back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological traces. A fortified complex with a church existed here from the early Middle Ages until the 14th century. In 992, Alderus de Castro was named lord of the castle, followed by Viadotto and Fabiano in 1230. Patriarch Gregorio of Montelongo acquired the castle in 1260, had it restored and expanded to oversee his Istrian possessions. After attacks by Venice in 1291 and Genoa in 1354, the castle lost its strategic importance. It frequently changed hands, including Alberto Bratti and later Alessandro Soranzo in 1545. Until the mid-19th century, the Manzini family were the owners. The Romanesque church from the 12th century served as a parish church until 1820 and was plastered and whitewashed in 1622 by order of Bishop Eusebio Caimo to serve as a beacon for seafarers.
