Tabor Castle

Until a few years ago, it was assumed that this was a residential tower that served as a temporary widow's residence for the Hungarian Queen Agnes towards the end of the 13th century. The tower could be the keep of a former castle, whose other buildings, such as the palas and utility buildings, have completely disappeared over time. Today, there is a greater tendency to see it as a defensive tower that was part of the late medieval town fortifications.

During the threat to Eastern Austria by the Turks, the building was used as a watchtower and beacon in the 16th and 17th centuries due to its excellent location. At the beginning of the 18th century, the tower represented the southern corner fortification of the so-called "Alte Schanze", a fortification that stretched from Lake Neusiedl to Hainburg on the Danube. It was intended to keep out the constantly invading Kuruc. In 1708, an attack was repelled with the help of three or four cannons. At that time, the tower was secured by a moat and an earthen rampart with a palisade fence. In addition, rondels had been built at the corners. The tower has long been a ruin. When the decay began and the reason for it is not known.
