Tannberg Castle

The origins of Tannberg Castle date back to the late 11th century, when Sigibot Tannberg, a seneschal of the Prince-Bishopric of Passau, is presumed to be the ancestor of the family. In 1188, Walter I von Tannberg, a Passau ministerialis, likely built the castle. When the Passau ministeriales rebelled against the bishop in 1240, Walter and Pilgrim von Tannberg sided with the bishop. In 1281, Konrad von Tannberg, along with his brother-in-law Kalhoch von Falkenstein, was accused of instigating feuds and making the roads unsafe. Consequently, they were ordered by the Bavarian dukes and the Bishop of Passau to compensate for the damages. Duke Albrecht I of Austria conquered the castle in 1289 during his feud against Duke Heinrich of Bavaria, but the Tannbergs remained feudal lords. In 1327, Kunrad von Tannberg pledged his service to Duke Friedrich III of Austria.
