Taxenbach Castle

The origins of Taxenbach Castle date back to the early 14th century. After the previously existing Edtburg was destroyed during the German Throne Dispute, Archbishop Friedrich III von Leibnitz acquired the Taxenbach court in 1323. For the new seat of the judicial district, a plot of land belonging to the parish priest of Taxenbach was exchanged, and a new defensive structure was built starting in 1325. This served as an administrative seat for the administrator and court clerk and also housed a prison. During the Peasants' War of 1525/26, the castle was destroyed but rebuilt by the defeated peasants by 1564. In the late 16th century, decay began, exacerbated by poor air and alleged ghost hauntings, leading the administrator to relocate his residence.
