Teufelsburg Castle

The origins of Teufelsburg date back to the 14th century. After the older Altenfelsberg Castle was destroyed by Elector Balduin of Trier in 1341, Duke Johann I of Lorraine had the new complex built between 1354 and 1360. The first documented mention of Neufilsberg, its name at the time, dates from 1370. The castle consisted of an upper castle, located on the mountain side and also known as the outer bailey or Old Castle, and a lower castle, the main castle, situated towards the valley. In 1699, Neufelsberg appeared for the last time in documents; by this time, it was already destroyed and uninhabited. The stones of the castle were used around 1680 for the construction of the Saarlouis fortress. The upper castle completely disappeared after 1680 due to quarrying. Excavations and the reconstruction of the main castle on its existing foundations began in 1968, followed by restoration work in 2009 and 2010. The popular name “Teufelsburg” (Devil's Castle) is based on a legend, according to which a knight of the castle made a pact with the devil.

The Teufelsburg castle ruin is located in Felsberg, a district of Überherrn, in the Saarlouis district in Saarland, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 319 meters above sea level.

Today, the Teufelsburg castle ruin is accessible to visitors. Inside the complex, there is a small museum displaying finds from the excavations, as well as tools from the sandstone quarries of Schlossberg, fossils, and minerals from Felsberg. Particularly impressive is the wide view over the Saar valley towards Saarlouis.
