The Thamsbrück Castle Ruin is in Thamsbrück in the Unstrut-Hainich district of Thuringia. Of the complex, only the square keep remains today.

History+

The origins of Thamsbrück Castle most likely date back to 1149, when it was presumably built by a Thuringian landgrave. Its strategic importance was due, among other things, to a bridge over the Unstrut, already mentioned in 900, as well as the interest of the landgraves. The castle was integrated into the town's fortifications and surrounded by a rampart and moat. It served not only as a residence but also as a court for the region, administered by bailiffs. In 1335, the town suffered considerable damage from the Erfurt militia.
