Thernberg Castle

Early documentary mentions of individuals associated with Thernberg date back to the 12th century, including an Emerich de Terrenberch in 1108 and Rapoto von Thernberg around 1150. The castle itself is first mentioned in 1227, with construction likely occurring in the first quarter of the 13th century. Originally owned by the Thernberg family, who were related to the Lords of Pitten, the castle was sold to Duke Friedrich in 1310. In 1408, it served as a prison for Vienna's mayor, Konrad Vorlauf. From 1412, it was a fief of the Pottendorfers, and after their extinction, it reverted to sovereign ownership. Around 1510, it passed to Wolfgang I. Thonradl, who renovated it and made it more habitable. In the 17th century, the castle lost its military significance, despite never being seriously attacked.
