Thürndl Castle

Thürndl is presumably a corner point of a medieval fortification from the 13th century. From the northern city gate, the so-called "Salzburger Tor", a connecting wall is said to have led through the Bannwald up to the Thürndl ruin.

In 1271, Berchtesgaden Abbey ceded a salt mine near the "Schozris" farm to the Salzburg Cathedral Chapter. In the mid-14th century, St. Peter's Monastery contributed to the "Pau Schozris". In 1583, an Andree Mitterlechner received the position of gamekeeper at the "Thurn an der Schosrissen", at the same time he was entrusted with the castle guard and took up residence there. The castle is still depicted on a map of Berchtesgaden from 1628. A Hallein city view made by Johann Faistenauer in 1632 shows, in addition to the main building on the spur of land, a second, lower object crowned with battlements, which could be the gatehouse with Zwinger, which no longer exists today.

In 1879, the tower became the property of the municipality of Hallein, which is still the owner today. In 2008, the ruin was renovated.
