Thurnhof Castle

The village of Hof has been documented since 1208, when Aribone Botho III received Hof and soon after the neighboring Mannersdorf. Both places belonged to Hungary at that time. In 1409, they were owned by Friedrich von Scharfeneck. Since 1517, Hof, along with Scharfeneck and Mannersdorf, belonged to Austria. From 1590 onwards, it was repeatedly referred to as Spitzhof or Thurnhof. Christoph Aichinger appears as the owner. It is possible that he was the one who expanded the Hof into a fortified complex.

In 1635, the fortified residence was princely and subject to the Vicedom in Vienna. It was usually bestowed upon deserving officers of the border troops, such as Georg Radimilowitsch in 1642 and Johann Gussenitsch in 1650. This was followed in 1658 by the Counts Cavriani. In 1748, the Thurnhof was owned by Countess Charlotte Fuchs. She sold the residence to Emperor Franz I of Lorraine, the husband of Maria Theresia. It passed into state ownership but was soon neglected, so much so that it was already described as a ruin in 1837.

Later, the building returned to private ownership. In the last quarter of the 20th century, it was restored to such an extent that it can again be partially inhabited.
