Trosky Castle

Trosky Castle, whose name was already mentioned in 1396 when it was first documented as the property of Vinzenz von Wartenberg, was likely built in the second half of the 14th century. After Vinzenz’s death in 1399, the castle passed to King Wenceslaus IV, who sold it to Otto the Elder of Bergow. His son, Otto the Younger, a staunch Catholic, successfully resisted a Hussite siege in 1424. A fire in 1428 destroyed large parts of the castle, with only the Maiden Tower remaining intact. In 1438, the robber knights Christoph Schof von Helfenburg and the Swiss captured the castle and imprisoned Otto the Younger. It was not until 1444 that the castle was recaptured with the support of the Upper Lusatian League of Six Towns. After further changes in ownership, Jindřich Smiřický von Smiřice acquired the castle in 1559 and incorporated it into his dominion, whose center was in Hrubá Skála. Trosky subsequently lost its importance, serving thereafter as a residence for officials and an administrative center. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was repeatedly taken by the Swedes and set on fire by the Imperial army in 1648. Although described as repairable in 1681, no restoration took place, and the castle gradually fell into disrepair.

The Trosky Castle Ruin is located in the Czech Republic, in the municipality of Troskovice in the Liberecký kraj district, which belongs to the Severovýchod region. It stands at an elevation of approx. 456 m above sea level.
