The castle ruin Trutzeltz, also known as Balduineltz or Neueltz, is a hilltop castle ruin in the Elz Valley. It is located just a stone's throw from Eltz Castle and was once built as a siege castle.

History+

Trutzeltz Castle was built during the Eltz Feud between 1331 and 1337. Archbishop Balduin of Trier had it erected as a siege castle against the Lords of Eltz, who resisted his territorial expansion. Despite the use of stone catapults and early firearms, Eltz Castle could not be captured. The feud ended in 1336 with a peace treaty.
