Tschakathurn (Schachenthurn) Castle

Tschakathurn Castle, also known as Schachenthurn, was most likely built in the 13th century. The castle served as an important control point due to its excellent view of the valleys. In 1299, the residential tower was first mentioned in a document.

Tschakathurn was demonstrably the seat of the knightly Schachner family from 1299 until the 15th century. Afterwards, the tower passed to several feudal lords until it was mortgaged at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1528, the tower came into the possession of the Herberstein family. They were followed in 1622 by the Stadl family, who had bought the tower from the emperor. They were followed by the Pichler (1625), the Pandegger (1687), the Leuzendorfer (1697) and the Welser (1709).

In 1740, the property passed to the Schwarzenberg family. In Vischer's copper engraving from 1681, the tower is depicted only as an unadorned, two-story building with a small annex. On November 20, 1792, a fire destroyed the previously inhabited tower down to its foundations. Today, the ruin is owned by the family of the Counts Revertera.
