Tudoburg Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Tudoburg castle ruin is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 615.8 m above sea level near Honstetten, a district of Eigeltingen in Hegau, Konstanz district, Baden-Württemberg. On the road from Eckartsbrunn to Honstetten, at the cemetery just before the entrance to Honstetten, a path branches off to the right. With a slight incline, it leads to a forest, where after about 200 meters you can already see a small overgrown rampart.

The origins of the castle are unknown. The Lords of Honstetten are presumed to be the builders between 1050 and 1150. The original name was Harperg or Hardberg and was later renamed Tudoburg after Tuto von Wagenhausen.

In 1362, the castle fell to the Lords of Hewen. When the Lordship of Hewen fell to Austria in 1398, Tudoburg was also included.

In 1404, the Counts of Lupfen-Stühlingen became the new lords of Tudoburg. After their death, the castle fell to the Counts of Pappenheim and, through marriage, the Fürstenbergs became the new owners.

In 1839, the castle was assigned to the Lordship of Langenstein Castle. The Counts of Douglas inherited the Lordship of Langenstein in 1872 and thus also became owners of Tudoburg.

The time of Tudoburg's destruction is not known, but the castle complex was already a ruin before the Thirty Years' War. The outer bailey was already being used for agriculture in 1588.

Description+

From the former castle complex, one can glimpse the old, very large outer bailey. South of the access, the foundation walls of an old tower can still be discerned. The large, almost flat outer bailey is bordered by a rampart now covered with trees. If one crosses the outer bailey, at the other end between the trees, one can still recognize the impressive wall of the palas. The path to the palas leads through a deep ditch. The other sides of the remaining palas fall steeply into the valley.
