Turmhölzle Castle

The Turmhölzle ruin is the ruin of a spur castle on a 620 m above sea level high spur-like outcrop of the Hohe Möhr east of the Raitbach district of the city of Schopfheim in the Lörrach district in Baden-Württemberg. From the former small castle complex from the High Middle Ages, the remains of the keep and other wall remains are still preserved.
No historical data about the castle complex are known to this day. According to the type of masonry of the keep, it could have been built during the 12th century. The current name Turmhölzle only emerged later and does not represent the historical name. In property registers from the 15th century, which were intended to record the property of the St. Blasien monastery in Raitbach, the name "Fernegg" is found for the castle area and thus probably also for the castle. Another reference to the castle could be a property register from 1360, which speaks of a farm "under the Egge". The castle was probably given by the monastery as a fief to ministerials and served to secure the monastic manorial rule.
In the summer of 1981, the castle ruin was extensively excavated.
Description+
The castle site is located on a spur summit facing west-southwest, which drops steeply on three sides into the surrounding stream valleys. The elongated-oval castle area is surrounded by a ring ditch with a partially heavily flattened outer wall; two further ditches were laid out towards the rising mountain side in the east.
The core complex consisted of a ring wall, a keep, and a building attached to the keep and the curtain wall. The square keep has a wall thickness of about 2.5 meters. Its masonry consisted of smooth ashlar without bosses. A larger building wing adjoins this main tower to the west; as construction joints show, this building was erected in several construction phases. The location of the castle gate is not yet known.
