Tursenstein Castle

The Counts of Poigen-Rebgau are considered the founders and first owners of the lordship and castle "Stein". In the early 12th century, a Wolfker von Stein appears in documents, who is later identified as Count Wolfker von Nalb. In the same century, the Counts of Hohenberg briefly followed the Counts of Poigen. After that, the castle passed to the sovereign, Duke Leopold VI.

Under the Babenbergs, the castle was granted to feudal tenants, none of whom are known. In 1265, it is mentioned again when King Ottokar II had a number of castles demolished, including "Stein". In 1288, a Heinrich von Stein, of the Sonnberger family, is assumed to be the feudal tenant. Before 1337, the seat fell to the Tursen, who were related to the Sonnbergers. In 1337, Reinprecht der Turs was enfeoffed with the "Stain auf dem Champ" by the Dukes and received permission to rebuild and expand the castle. After his death in 1367, it fell to Ulrich von Pernstein, who sold it to Ulrich von Maissau in 1377.

In 1396, Duke Albrecht IV handed the castle over to Altenburg Abbey, which, in exchange for considerable compensation, was able to have the seat demolished. In 1419, the castle was already described as dilapidated.
