History+

The origins of the castle date back to the 11th century, when a noble family from Kappel near Villingen-Schwenningen erected the complex. In 1030, a tragic event occurred near the castle, claiming the lives of Duke Ernst of Swabia and Werner von Kyburg. In the mid-13th century, the Lords of Falkenstein acquired the neighboring Ramstein Castle. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Falkenstein family split into the lines Falkenstein auf Falkenstein and Falkenstein auf Ramstein. The Falkensteins exerted influence in the Middle Ages, including as abbots and canons in Strasbourg and in monasteries such as St. Georgen and Reichenau. Between 1444 and 1449, Jakob and Konrad von Falkenstein sold the castle and parts of their possessions to Count Ludwig von Württemberg.
