The castle ruin of Valcastiel, also known as Valkastiel, stands above Vandans in Vorarlberg, Austria. Its exposed location and scarce historical records make it a testament to medieval architecture, with origins dating back to the oldest in the region.

History+

For a long time, Valcastiel was identified with Montafon Castle, mentioned in 1391 and likely destroyed in the Appenzell War of 1405. However, more recent research suggests that “Montafon Castle” was more likely a designation for a medieval dominion rather than a specific building. The site was restored in 1926 and archaeologically investigated between 2002 and 2003. During these excavations, wall remains were discovered, dating back to around 1120/40, making them among the oldest medieval finds in Vorarlberg.
