Veldenz Castle Ruin, a hilltop castle, is on a mountain spur in Rhineland-Palatinate, near the Moselle Valley. Once the center of a county, the extensive complex of its historical significance.

History+

The first documented mention of Veldenz Castle dates back to 1156, when Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa confirmed the possession of Bishop Albert I of Verdun. From the 12th century, it was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Veldenz and the center of their county. After the extinction of the Veldenz line in 1444, the castle fell to Palatinate-Zweibrücken.
