Veldenz Castle

The first documented mention of Veldenz Castle dates back to 1285. It was built by Wilhelm Bossel II. vom Stein, who had to grant the Count of Veldenz the right of access to the complex. After the extinction of the vom Stein family, the castle passed into the possession of the Counts of Veldenz. In the mid-15th century, the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken acquired the castle and the associated lordship of Nohfelden. It served as the official residence of a Zweibrücken bailiff until the French Revolution. In 1490, Duke Kaspar was imprisoned here by his brother Alexander and remained in captivity until his death in 1527. Although the castle was damaged in the wars of the 17th century, it was always maintained. In 1661, Duke Friedrich died at the castle. After being declared French national property in 1804, the castle was sold to the Cetto brothers and subsequently fell into disrepair, serving as a quarry. Today, the municipality of Nohfelden owns the ruin.
