The remains of the Castle can be visited

The castle ruin Vilsegg, a complex, was constructed around 1220/30 and stands on a rocky hill above the Vils Valley in Tyrol, near the Austrian-German border.

History+

In 1263, the first documentary mention of a vassal of the Lords of Hohenegg, Heinrich von Vilsegg, residing at the castle, appears. The Hoheneggs themselves were vassals of Kempten Abbey. After 1314, the last year of mention for the ministerials of Vilsegg, the Hoheneggs directly took over the castle. Although Count Meinhard II of Tyrol tried to expand his territory in the early 14th century and conquered some Hohenegg castles, Vilsegg remained in their possession as a Kempten fief until 1408. Subsequently, the abbey enfeoffed the Duke of Austria, who in turn returned the castle as a sub-fief to the Hoheneggs.
