Waisenberg Castle
The Waisenberg Castle Ruin is perched on an isolated, rocky, wooded hill northwest of Völkermarkt in Carinthia. The preserved structural elements bear witness to Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance influences, making it a remarkable testament to past eras.
History+
The first documented mention of Waisenberg Castle dates back to 1167, when Bishop Heinrich I of Gurk reacquired the "castrum in Thrusen, quod Waysenberch dictum est" from Volbert von Liebenberg. The castle was part of the Gurk Diocese's property, which repeatedly granted it as a fief. In the 13th century, Otto von Waisenberg ceded his rights to the castle to Bishop Ulrich I. Later, in 1258, Bishop Dietrich II granted the castle's tower to Ulrich and his brothers for safekeeping. The Gurk bishops also used Waisenberg as a residence, as evidenced by a document from 1285.
