Waldeck Castle

The origins of the spur castle are not fully clear, but an Ortwin von Waldeck was documented as early as 1140. The oldest preserved architectural elements date back to around 1200. The Lords of Waldeck established themselves as figures in the 13th century, building a territory, which was also reflected in donations to monasteries. Their prosperity was possibly boosted by the nearby silver mines of Neubulach. However, the influence of the Waldeckers led to conflicts with their feudal lords, the Counts of Hohenberg. The latter besieged the Waldeck castles twice, in 1279 and 1284, with the second siege, supported by King Rudolf of Habsburg, leading to the destruction of the complexes. Historical sources report "quinque castra in uno monte," five castles on one mountain. Recent investigations confirmed that three other castles indeed existed west of the current Waldeck Ruin, dating to the 13th century.
