The Wartenburg castle ruin is on an elevated position on the left bank of the Vöckla river, near the municipal border of Timelkam and Vöcklabruck in Upper Austria. Of the former fortress, mainly the round keep remains today.

The first documented mention of the Wartenburg dominion occurred in 1128, when Arnold von Wartenburg was named in the foundation charter of Gleink Abbey. For over three centuries, the dominion was owned by the Lords of Pollheim, with Ortolf von Pollheim documented as owner in 1319. Wolfgang von Polheim (1458–1512) founded the first Paulaner monastery in the German-speaking world in Oberthalheim. His descendants, including Cyriak von Polheim (1495–1533), embraced the Reformation.
