Wartenfels Castle

Wartenfels Castle was constructed in 1259 by Konrad von Steinkirchen, who commissioned it together with his son-in-law Konrad zu Kalham, later Konrad von Wartenfels. From 1267, the castle is mentioned in documents. In 1301, another Konrad von Kalham sold the castle and its associated lands to Archbishop Konrad IV of Salzburg, but received it back as a fief. After the extinction of the Kalham family, the Archbishop established a district court (Pfleggericht) at Wartenfels, which existed until 1564. During the Peasant War of 1525/26, the castle was set on fire and, despite compensation payments from the court officials, was not fully rebuilt.
