Weferlingen Castle

The castle ruin Weferlingen, also simply called Weferlingen Castle, is the ruin of a castle in Oebisfelde-Weferlingen in the district of Börde in Saxony-Anhalt. The keep of the castle is called Grauer Harm or Grauer Hermann.
The castle was probably built in the 13th century by the Lords of Hohenlage as a moated castle. After the castle was conquered by Duke Albrecht of Braunschweig in 1316, it was later again documented as a feudal estate of the Honlage family and came into the self-administration of the Bishop of Halberstadt at the beginning of the 16th century and was converted into a palace. In the 17th century, the castle was owned by Prince Friedrich II of Hesse-Homburg. Since 1717, the castle was no longer inhabited, was later used as a granary and burned down at the end of 1929.

The early Gothic moated castle, a three-sided complex with a square castle courtyard and an outer bailey that completely enclosed the core castle, was formerly protected by the waters of the Aller and had a ten-meter-wide moat, which is now used as a road. The outer walls of the castle, whose windows show the Renaissance style, are still preserved to the height of three stories.
The well-preserved keep in the outer bailey has a height of 30 meters on a base area of 12 by 12 meters and a wall thickness of 2.5 meters. Events now take place on the castle grounds. The castle was renovated in nine construction phases to preserve the ruin from decay.
On the Day of the Open Monument in September 2012, the renovated keep, which was converted into an observation tower, could be climbed for the first time. On October 21, 2012, the viewing platform installed in the tower was officially opened.
