Wegelnburg Castle

The Wegelnburg was built in the 12th or 13th century as an imperial castle by the Staufer dynasty. In 1282, it was destroyed by Strasbourg troops after the imperial bailiff had violated the peace. By 1330, it was rebuilt and expanded by the family of Wegelnburg. Later, the castle was pledged to the House of Palatinate and was owned by the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken from 1417 to 1793. In 1679, as part of the Peace of Nijmegen, the Wegelnburg was razed and destroyed by French troops under General Monclar. Between 1979 and 1982, renovation work was carried out, during which debris was removed and the remaining structural elements were restored.
