Weissenberg Castle

The Weissenberg Fortress was the seat of a family whose name can be traced between 1268 and 1328. For example, in 1268, an "Otto de Weizzenbergkh" is mentioned. The castle allegedly fell into disrepair thereafter, and the associated estates came under the rule of Mollenburg.

Around 1560, Samson Prätzl von der Mollenburg rebuilt the castle in a palatial style and elevated Weißenberg to the seat of a lordship, to which he assigned the districts of Marbach an der Donau, Münichreith and Laimbach, the Kollnitz forestry office, and the regional court. After 1599, separate owners are already mentioned, detached from Mollenburg, including the Prock von Dietmannsdorf, the Wisent, and the Lindegg.

In 1672, according to Vischer's engraving, the castle still appeared to be habitable. However, in 1675, it is described as very dilapidated and small, with only the roof still intact, otherwise the doors and windows had been torn out, and its economy was managed from Edelsreith. The Starhemberg family bought the lordship with the ruinous castle in 1678 and moved its administration to the manor house in Marbach. The castle was left to decay. In 1818, the estate came into the imperial family fund and was united with the Persenbeug lordship. After the First World War, it was managed and cared for by the Republic's Invalid Fund and then by Bundesforsten (Federal Forests). Today, the ruin is in private ownership.
