Wernerseck Castle

The origins of the site date back to late antiquity, when a Roman hilltop fortification existed there, likely serving as a refuge castle and used until the early 5th century. Construction of the current Wernerseck Castle began at the end of 1401 under the Trier Archbishop Werner von Falkenstein. Initially conceived as a border fortress against the Archbishop of Cologne, it lost this function due to border shifts during its construction. Later, it served administrative purposes, and from the 16th century onwards, it was pledged to the Lords of Eltz, who owned it until the 19th century. Between 1966 and 1969, the castle housed a falconry. A support association was involved in renovating the residential tower from 2006 to 2007.
