The castle ruin of Wertheim is on a narrow mountain spur between the Main and Tauber rivers, high above the city of Wertheim. It is one of the oldest castle ruins in Baden-Württemberg.

History+

Construction of the castle began in the 12th century, when the Counts of Wertheim, a Franconian noble family, first named themselves after this location in 1132. The complex developed into a cultural hub, hosting the poet Wolfram von Eschenbach. The comital seat was expanded with defensive fortifications and residential palaces. After the extinction of the Counts of Wertheim in 1556, the castle passed to Ludwig Count of Stolberg-Königstein, followed by Count Ludwig of Löwenstein in 1598.
