In Wetter, North Rhine-Westphalia, the Wetter Castle Ruin stands on an outcrop of the Ardey Mountains. Its location near Lake Harkort and the historic town hall makes it a striking point.

History+

The origins of the place name Wetter date back to 1214, when the knights Bruno and Friedrich were mentioned in documents. Between 1250 and 1274, the Counts of the Mark erected Wetter Castle as an outpost against the Electoral Cologne Castle Volmarstein. Count Engelbert I of the Mark transferred the castle to his son Count Eberhard I in 1274 as a wedding gift. From here, the Wetter office was administered from 1300 onwards, and later Volmarstein as well. During the Soest Feud (1444–1449), the Märkisch bailiff Craft Stecken was besieged in the castle by Cologne and Bohemian forces.
