The remains of the castle can be visited

In Raabs an der Thaya is the castle ruin Widersberg, a hilltop castle ruin. The remains of this late medieval complex sit on a rock, about 30 meters above the Thaya river.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, as evidenced by the preserved wall remains. In 1268, Ortolfus and Sifridus de Widerspach appear in a document, with the first mention still referring to a stream. Around 1300, a "villa Widersperkch" is mentioned in a property register of Herzogenburg Monastery, indicating a manor farm or a village. In 1314, a Herbort (Merbot) der Widersperger appears in connection with a soul mass foundation. Later, in 1340, a Wichard is documented, also mentioned at Lehnstein Castle.
