The Wiesneck castle ruin is located in the Wiesneck district of the municipality of Buchenbach in Breisgau Hochschwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg. This former fortress, located at approximately 510 meters above sea level, once guarded important valley crossings.

History+

The first documented mention of Wiesneck Castle occurred in 1079, when it was owned by the Counts of Haigerloch. As early as 1096, Count Adalberg of Haigerloch adopted the name von Haigerloch-Wiesneck, underscoring the castle's importance to this family. The lords of the castle became rivals of the Zähringer, and Bruno von Haigerloch-Wiesneck founded St. Märgen Monastery in 1118. Around 1121, the Zähringer suffered the first destruction of the castle, but rebuilt it.
