Wildegg Castle

The castle, which is located on a narrow rocky spur above Stall, dates back to the 10th or 11th century. It was first owned by the Diocese of Freising, followed by the Archdiocese of Salzburg as the landlord during the 12th century. The first documented mention of the castle dates from 1197. In 1271, it was mentioned in a document with the Count of Görz.

In 1278, the castles of Stall and Rangsburg were destroyed due to a feud between the Archbishops of Salzburg and the Counts of Görz, and again in 1292. Subsequently, the administration of Rangersdorf was transferred to the rebuilt Stall Castle. After a fire in 1353, it was renewed again and subsequently became the seat of Salzburg ministeriales.

In 1632, Christoph von Mohre zu Sonnegg und Mohrburg was the last castle warden at Wildegg. In 1670, the castle was already described as "dilapidated". In 1723, the bailiff of Stall, who still "resided" in the castle, asked for permission to build a "Keusche" (small house), as the castle was already too ruinous. Indeed, in 1731, after a long period of rain, it "collapsed on three sides with a loud crash".
