The Wildeneck castle ruin, an impressive spur castle, is situated on the western shore of Lake Irrsee in Upper Austria. Although only sparse remains are preserved today, the remnants bear witness to a turbulent history and a once significant complex that shaped the region.

The origins of Wildeneck Castle date back to the 12th century when it was built around 1140 by Rapoto I of Ortenburg. In 1286, Count Rapoto IV sold the castle to Dukes Stephan and Otto of Lower Bavaria. After a period of Bavarian rule, Count Heinrich III of Ortenburg regained possession of the complex in 1321. Around 1370, the Bavarian regional court of Wildeneck was established, subordinate to the Burghausen rent office and administered by caretakers who also served as regional judges. From the late 16th century, but no later than 1611, the castle was abandoned and left to decay, as the regional court had been moved to Mondsee.
