Around 1100, the lords of the Rechberg regional court built Wildenstein Castle to protect their dominion. Between 1147 and 1154, Count Berthold von Stein in Jauntal documented for Viktring Abbey in "castello Wildenstein". In the cadastre of Rechberg, a "castrum Wildenbrech" is also mentioned in 1257.
According to tradition, the castle of the noble family of the Wildensteins fell victim to the powerful earthquake in 1348. That the castle no longer existed in the 15th century is proven by a document from 1468, where Emperor Karl III enfeoffs Christof Ungnad with Sonnegg and it also speaks of a "pond site under the destroyed house Wildenstein". However, the Wildenstein family is still traceable later.
Today, only parts of the enceinte, a tower structure and a piece of the palas are recognizable from the castle.
