The Wildenstein Castle Ruin, a former hilltop castle, lies hidden in a forest at the foot of the Donnersberg. As part of the Donnersberg castle ring, it once formed a defensive line with three other castles in Rhineland-Palatinate.

History+

The exact construction period of Wildenstein Castle is not known. Its first documented mention occurred in 1276, when the complex passed to Philipp V. von Bolanden's daughter Lukardis after his death. Between 1304 and 1308, the castle came into the possession of King Albrecht of Habsburg through an exchange with Gleichen Castle. In 1321, King Frederick the Fair enfeoffed the Wildenstein site to Count Philipp von Sponheim-Dannenfels for two decades, and in 1328, it became a sub-fief of the Counts of Leiningen.
