Wilenstein Castle

The origins of Wilenstein Castle date back to the 12th century, with its construction likely occurring around 1152 under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. It served to protect the Staufer family estate and the imperial territory around Kaiserslautern. In 1169, a Merbodo von Wartenberg was mentioned as a nobleman of Wilenstein, serving as a ministerialis. From 1247, the castle was a fief of the Counts of Leiningen. In 1334, the castle suffered destruction due to inheritance disputes but was rebuilt. From 1347, the Knights of Flersheim and the widowed Countess of Falkenstein shared the fief, leading to a double castle complex with an upper and lower castle. After disputes, a castle peace was concluded. In 1481, the entire complex fell to the Electoral Palatinate.
