Willersdorf Castle

In the valley of the Willersbach, about 50 meters above the valley, lie the remains of a small castle, built by the Counts of Güssing between 1279 and 1289, and already destroyed in 1289.

The castle occupies a spur of land located at the confluence of a small side stream with the Willersdorfer Bach. The foreland is slightly higher than the castle itself and slopes gently towards the castle. There was a spacious outer bailey, surrounded by a still indistinctly recognizable ditch and rampart. In front of the main castle lies a neck ditch carved out of the rock. Behind it rises the only recognizable wall remnant of the castle. Parts of a shield wall are also still preserved. The curtain wall of the castle has completely disappeared; its extent can only be deduced from the flat area behind the shield wall. Two piles of rubble are still visible, probably originating from buildings, between which lay a small courtyard. The entire main castle is surrounded by an oval ditch with a rampart in front of it. Outside the rampart, the terrain slopes relatively steeply towards the valley for Burgenland conditions.
