Wimberg Castle
The Wimberg castle ruin, also known as Neuhauser Burgstall, is situated on the Austrian bank of the Inn river, directly at the entrance to the Vornbach Narrows in Upper Austria. It is considered a plateau-edge castle that once protected vast plateaus.
History+
The defensive structure's creation is attributed to the late Early Middle Ages (9th to 10th century). In the 15th century, the castle was still in good condition and maintained by its own guards before it gradually fell into disrepair from the 16th century onwards. Archaeological finds such as keys and spearheads confirm its use in the Late Middle Ages. Around 1880, the priest and archaeologist Johann Ev. Lamprecht documented the site and suggested it served as an outpost for Neuburg am Inn Castle. It is also mentioned in local castle literature as part of a chain of fortifications along the Inn.
