The Winneburg castle ruin is a hilltop castle in Rhineland-Palatinate, located in the municipality of Cochem.

History+

The construction of Winneburg took place in the second half of the 13th century. Its first documented mention dates back to 1304, when it was owned by a Wirich von Wunnenberg. The complex was continuously expanded but remained the property of the Wunnenberg family, who later adopted the name Winneburg. After the extinction of this lineage in 1637, the castle passed into the possession of the Metternich family in the mid-17th century.
