Winterstetten Castle

The origins of Winterstetten Castle are likely with the Lords of Winterstetten, whose last known representative was active in imperial circles at the end of the 12th century. Around 1214, the imperial ministerialis Konrad von Tanne, later also known as Konrad von Winterstetten, took over the lordship. As a confidant of Emperor Frederick II and tutor to King Henry, he played a role, including as guardian of the imperial regalia and founder of Baindt Monastery. After his death, the castle passed to Konrad von Schmalegg, whose descendant Schenk Konrad was besieged by the Bishop of Constance in 1261 and had to submit.
