The Wippra Castle Ruin is also known as Altenburg or Old Castle. Its remains are on a rock in the Wippra Valley in Saxony-Anhalt.

History+

The origins of Wippra Castle likely date back to the early 11th century, when it was built by the Counts of Wippra, thereby laying the foundation for local manorial rule. The Counts of Wippra resided in the castle until around 1175, before it passed into the possession of the Lords of Hackedorn. They sold the complex to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg in 1328. From 1440, the Counts of Mansfeld owned the castle, and later the Lords of Hoym are also mentioned as owners. After 1579, the castle began to fall into disrepair.
